RuneLite vs Third-Party Clients: Which OSRS Clients Are Actually Safe?
An honest comparison of official RuneLite against third-party OSRS clients like Storm Client, and why 'premium' closed-source clients put your account at risk.
Every OSRS player eventually asks which client to use. The honest answer is short: use official RuneLite or the official Jagex client. Most "premium" third-party clients trade your account security for convenience — and Storm Client is a documented example of that going badly wrong.
The safe clients
- RuneLite — open source, community-audited, free, and permitted by Jagex. Hundreds of genuinely useful plugins ship in the official plugin hub.
- Official Jagex Client — guaranteed safe, maintained by Jagex.
- HDOS — a Jagex-approved client with HD graphics.
Where third-party clients go wrong
Closed-source clients like Storm Client ask you to run obfuscated code that you cannot inspect. When we decompiled Storm Client's Allure plugins, we found credential-stealing code that harvests passwords, session tokens, and Discord data. You would never see this by using the client normally.
"But it has plugins RuneLite doesn't"
Almost every legitimate feature these clients advertise already exists as a safe, free RuneLite plugin. The features that don't exist in RuneLite are usually the ones Jagex bans accounts for. Paying for them means risking both a ban and, as with Storm Client, outright account theft.
How to evaluate any client
- Is the source code public and auditable?
- Is it recommended by Jagex or the wider community?
- Does it ask for payment to unlock "premium" closed plugins?
- Does installing it require disabling antivirus warnings?
Storm Client fails the first two and matches the last two. Stick with RuneLite.
